President Trump said the Supreme Court “RANSACKED” America with its tariff ruling. He’s not wrong. And the fact that it was his own appointees who helped do it makes the betrayal even worse.
In February, the Supreme Court struck down Trump’s global tariffs in a 6-3 vote. Chief Justice John Roberts — the same John Roberts who saved Obamacare — wrote that the Constitution “very clearly” gives Congress the power to impose tariffs. Six justices agreed, including two that Trump himself put on the bench: Amy Coney Barrett and Neil Gorsuch. The only dissenters were the three justices who actually understand what they were nominated to do.
The Court That Corporate America Bought
Let’s be honest about what happened here. The tariffs were designed to protect American workers and punish countries that have been ripping us off for decades. China, the EU, and every other trading partner that has enjoyed lopsided deals at America’s expense were finally being held accountable. And the Supreme Court — stacked with justices who were supposed to be constitutionalists — sided with the multinational corporations and foreign interests that profit from the status quo.
Trump didn’t mince words on Truth Social. He thanked the three dissenting justices and tore into the rest, saying they “openly disrespect the Presidents who nominate them to the highest position in the Land.” He called the court “completely inept and embarrassing” and said it was never meant to function this way. He’s right. The founders didn’t create the Supreme Court so that six unelected lawyers could override the economic policy of a president who was elected specifically to impose tariffs.
Barrett and Gorsuch: The Ultimate Betrayal
Trump singled out Barrett and Gorsuch, calling them “an embarrassment to their families.” Harsh? Maybe. Accurate? Absolutely. These are justices who were nominated because they were supposed to be originalists — judges who interpret the Constitution as written, not as a blank check for the administrative state to override elected leadership.
But when it came time to back the president who put them there, they folded. They sided with Roberts and the liberal bloc because the establishment legal class told them to. The Federalist Society cocktail circuit mattered more than the factory workers in Ohio and Michigan who voted for Trump because he promised to fight for them.
Who Really Won
The winners of this ruling aren’t the American people. It’s the corporate lobbying class that has spent decades shipping jobs overseas. It’s the Chamber of Commerce Republicans who never wanted tariffs in the first place. It’s China, which gets to keep flooding our markets with cheap goods made by exploited labor. The Supreme Court didn’t protect the Constitution — it protected the corporate overlords who have been writing the rules for decades.
Trump will find a way around this. He always does. But the fact that his own court couldn’t back him on the signature economic issue of his presidency tells you everything you need to know about how deep the rot goes in Washington.
