Jimmy Kimmel took the stage at the Oscars on Sunday to present the award for Best Documentary Short Film and couldn’t resist taking a shot at First Lady Melania Trump. Mocking her recent documentary, Kimmel sneered that some documentaries are about “walking around the White House trying on shoes.” The Hollywood audience tittered on cue, because that’s what trained seals do.

But before we let Kimmel lecture anyone about women’s dignity, substance, or cultural taste, let’s take a quick stroll down memory lane to a little show called The Man Show.

The Man Show: A Refresher

For those too young to remember, Jimmy Kimmel co-created and co-hosted The Man Show on Comedy Central from 1999 to 2003. The show’s signature segment? “Girls on Trampolines” — exactly what it sounds like. The show was a celebration of everything that modern feminism now considers a capital offense: objectifying women, beer-chugging, and treating the entire female gender as a punchline.

This is the man who now positions himself as Hollywood’s moral conscience. This is the guy who cries on camera about healthcare policy, lectures middle America about gun control, and apparently feels qualified to mock the First Lady of the United States for making a documentary about her life.

The Hypocrisy Is the Point

Kimmel has repeatedly called Melania’s documentary a “vanity project.” Her film, directed by Brett Ratner, follows her life and time in the White House and has been streaming on Amazon Prime Video. Conservative commentators have praised its authenticity. But Kimmel — who built his entire career on a show that literally ended every episode with women bouncing on trampolines — thinks a documentary by an immigrant woman who became First Lady isn’t worth taking seriously.

Imagine if a conservative commentator had mocked Michelle Obama’s documentary with this level of contempt. Imagine the headlines. Imagine the think pieces about misogyny and racism that would flood every outlet from the New York Times to Vox. But when it’s Melania Trump? Open season. Because in Hollywood’s moral universe, some women deserve respect and others deserve to be a punchline at an awards show.

Hollywood’s Favorite Punching Bag

Kimmel also announced the winner for best feature documentary and joked that President Trump would enjoy certain films. Hilarious. Original. Brave. A man standing in a room full of people who agree with him, making jokes about the people who don’t — and somehow thinking that makes him courageous.

Jimmy Kimmel should be permanently disqualified from any commentary to the left of center. You don’t get to launch your career on The Man Show and then reinvent yourself as a feminist ally who gets to mock women you disagree with politically. Pick a lane, Jimmy. Or better yet, just go back to the trampolines. At least that was honest about what it was.
